A television-turned-movie star, McQueen was the sexiest and toughest leading man of his day. Starring in films such as "The Magnificent Seven", "Bullitt", and "The Great Escape", he became one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood. McQueen was nominated for an Oscar and four Golden Globe awards, and received a star on the Hollywood walk of fame.
When you think “car movie,” Bullitt is always one of the first ones that come to people’s minds. It has brought us the most famous and iconic car chase scene in history. Never before has any film production spent so much time and effort in creating a scene like that. However, in 2012 the TV show Alcatraz did a remarkable job recreating the scene- right down to the killer reverse burnout WITH wheel hop. My personal favorite part of the chase was when the ‘68 Charger lost its 5th hub cap trying to pull away from the Mustang- I guess that one slipped by in the cutting room, haha.

McQueen himself did a good portion of the stunt driving (at least until the insurance agents showed up on set), and the green Ford Mustang in Bullitt became one of the many vehicles made famous by association with Steve McQueen. From 1959 - 1970, Steve was a race car driver- no one could figure out if he was a racer or an actor. Either way, his love of speed made its way into most of his movies.
It would do the man no justice if I didn't mention his finest quality; Terrence Steven McQueen was a good man with a big heart. As a child, he lived in a home for troubled boys and he credits them with setting him on the straight and narrow. He often went back to visit after getting his fame. He would donate like crazy. Not just to his old school, but when he was on set if he met someone who needed help, be it a monetary donation, food, a place to live, Steve always found a way to help others. Although he wore the badass cap very well, he was in reality a fine person and philanthropist….. with a fast car of course.
